BARELY 2 months after heavily armed invaded Government Science Secondary School,Kankara in Kastina State abducted about 300 students, a similar scenerio played out at Government Science College Kagara in Rafi LGA, Niger State killed a student, kidnapped 27 others and 12 members of a family. The ugly incident which sources said has sent shock waves down the spines of residents and parents alike has also been a source of worry to Governor Abubakar Sani-Bello who has assured that government was already making frantic efforts to rescue the abducted students and the 12 family members. The Governor has therefore, directed that all boarding schools in Shiroro, Rafi and Muyan be closed down with immediate effect until the situation improves adding that President Muhammadu Buhari has dispatched security operatives to the state with a view to rescuing that abducted persons. Governor Bello implores the Federal Government to deploy all resources to secure the state, while the State Government was doing everything possible to ensure safe return of the students and staff; assuring that the State Government would not pay ransom to the suspected bandits in order to secure the release of their victims, but that it was ready to support any bandit who was ready to surrender their arms. According to him, “When you negotiate and pay ransom to criminals, they will use the money to purchase more weapons.”
Recall that 40 passengers travelling from Kontagora to Minna were abducted by suspected gunmen.
However, 8 out of the 40 passengers abducted had regained freedom, while the remaining are still in the hands of their abductors who are demanding ransom.
