WITH the seeming respite pervading the entire length and breadth of Lagos State following Thursday evening Presidential appeal to the #EndSARS protesters to go off the streets, Lagosians are currently in for another round of hardship as banks have closed shop. Our Investigator Reporters who went round the city report that none of the commercial banks in the state opened for operation today. Aside the fact that banks are not in operation, all the Automated Teller Machines ATMs across the state are not dispensing cash as most of their screens remain blank. Meanwhile, operators of POS who have flooded major streets and close to banks and ATM galleries; though operating with caution are making brisk business, charging higher than before per transaction. CrimeWorld scooped that for a N5000 withdrawal, the operators charge as high as N300 as against normal N100. For transaction up to N10,000 and above, they collect N600 and N1200 as the case may be.

Whereas, some respondents who spoke to us blamed hoodlums who infiltrated the #EndSARS protesters to attack some banks and ATMs stands others blamed bankers for being insensitive to their customers. For madam Nonyen, “We are suffering for what we know nothing about. Why will anybody go into bank or ATM stand, broke into it and loot people’s money in the name of protest; that’s criminal. I don’t blame any bank that didn’t open for operation today because there’s fear and apprehension in the air. Now I paid N600 commission to withdraw N10000. If you don’t have money at hand and you are to part with just N600 to get N10000, no wahala. Life goes on. Another respondent, Taiwo Alabi, is not happy with bank operators for abandoning their banks today as well as disabled their ATM Galleries. He said, “This is unpatriotic on the part of bankers. If you are not opening for operation today, no problem but why disable all your ATMs? I needed N20000 for the weekend and now I have to pay N1200; this is crazy. We are simply enemies to ourselves in this country.”
