THE Nigerian Customs Services NCS has raised the alarm over expired seasoning currently being sold and innocently consumed in some quarters of the country. The seasoning identified as “Ninido Cubes” sources said was imported into the country from the neigbhouring Niger Republic by yet to be identified importer adding that the cubes had since expiring in June, 2019. A signal raised to this effect by Comptroller in charge of Enforcement, Controller A. H Sabo, directed to the relevant departments and sighted by CrimeWorld at the Customs Head quarters Abuja, revealed that the Comptroller General of Customs CGC, Colonel Ahmed Ali (Rtd) had mandated discrete investigation of mopping up the expired product and ensure that the importer was identified and prosecuted. The signal blamed the porous nature of the nation’s international borders adding, “The CGC is in receipt of intelligence that revealed the ongoing distribution and sale of expired seasoning cubes with the trademark, Ninido Cubes by some marketer across the country. Some of these food condiments were recently spotted in Gumel LGA of Jigawa State. The product believed to have been imported into the country from the neigbouring Niger Republic has expiring date of June 2019 and presently being sold at the central market Gumel by some traders. The importation of expired food items and other contrabands into the country through the porous international borders constitutes huge economic and health challenges. This is even as recent analysis indicated that some developed countries are targeting West Africa sub-regions to dump some of these products without recourse to the attendant implications. The CGC has directed that all necessary measure should be put in place to ensure that officers are at alert to watch out for theses expired seasoning and smugglers for possible arrest and prosecution.”
