PANDEMONIUM broke out weekend in Lagos after operatives attached to the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Agency LNSA took the bull by the horns and stormed some dreaded areas in Lagos Island where weeds suspected to be India hemp were freely being sold and consumed. At the end of the several hours of painstaking ‘sting operation’ the operatives who were assisted by some Police personnel led by the Area A’ Commander, ACP Monday Agbonika seized over 33 bags of the killer weeds and arrested 48 suspects. Sources said the raid which was first of its kind in the state came as a rude shock to residents who saw the drug peddlers and users in the areas as untouchable. Already, sources hinted that the suspects and the seized drugs had since been handed over to the Lagos Task Force on Environment and Special Offences for further investigation and prosecution. A statement signed by the Agency’s public affairs officer, Mr. Afolabi Olawale and made available to CrimeWorld weekly newspaper said the raid was carried out at Obalene and Adeniji Adele areas following an intelligence tipoff. According to the statement, “LNSA on Friday embarked on a twelve hour sting raid across Patey Street, Obalende, Adeniji-Adele under bridge following intelligence report that Indian hemp and some hard drugs were being traded by the Area boys freely unchecked. According to Mr. Ishola Laguda board member representative Lagos Division who led the operations together with area ‘Area A’Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police ACP Monday Agbonika with LNSC Commander Lagos Division Commander Giwa Bioku and Corps Officers from Lagos Island West, East, Ikoyi- Obalende, mainland and Iru LCDA; all attested to the fact that illicit drug peddling in those areas had been on for so long unchecked saying the raid was first of its kind in the history of Lagos because those area are being referred to as a no go area for security operatives. But operatives of the LNSC were able to achieve this through good intelligence report and planning. At the end of the operation, 33 bags of Indian hemps were seized while 48 suspects between the ages of 20 and 50 were arrested. The Lagos Divisional representative therefore, urges members of the public to volunteer useful information that would enhance good performance from the agency. The suspects and the seized bags of the dried killer weeds had since been handed over to the Lagos State Task Force for further investigation while the suspects will be arraigned in a court of competent jurisdiction at the end of the investigation.
