By Ekamma UBA, Senior Staff writer

THE Inspector-General of Police IGP Ibrahim Idris has gone cap in hand before governors across the country soliciting for financial assistance to fund the proposed Nigeria Police Broadcasting Services NPBS, saying the budgetary allocation for the Police Force alone cannot see the project through. The Police helmsman made the call at a meeting with the governors’ forum in Abuja on Thursday July 20, 2017.

It was not however, clear whether the governors forum approached for assistance were of the of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC extraction alone because the immediate past administration witnessed both a PDP and APC Governors forums respectively.

But sources said the IGP was emphatic that the proposed broadcasting stations would address substantial aspect of the current national security challenges in the country if it comes into operation. A statement by the Force public relations officer, CSP Jimoh Moshood quoted the IGP as saying,

“I passionately wish to seek Your Excellences’ assistance for the funding of the Nigeria Police Broadcasting Services NPBS which is a project being created to deliver Public Service Broadcast function that will assist in addressing many of the current security challenges across the country, adding , “When commissioned, it will broadcast nationwide on TV, Radio, online and the National Emergency Communication Command Control Centre NEC4 with its Headquarters in Abuja and locations in each of the 36 states and the FCT to give effective national coverage. It will enable the Police to tell its story and set the record straight by telling positive stories and correcting distorted information.”

The super cop also added that the station would also be used to build community relations and enhance positive relations with members of the public; maintaining that the regular budgetary allocation to the Police cannot fund Police operations without alternative source of funding. Reiterating his avowal to give policing a human face, the

IGP assured that the Police under him would guaranty the protection of lives and property in the country.
Responding, Chairman, Nigeria Governor’s Forum, Alhaji Abdulhazeez Yari, Governor of Zamfara State gave the Police a pat on the back for dousing security challenges in the country while assuring the IGP of their support to ensuring the success and smooth takeoff of the broadcasting services.

Governor Yari maintained that security is every body’s business and therefore, if the proposed broadcasting stations would address the security issues currently being witnessed in the country, there was dire need to give it a priority attention.

The Governors Forum set up a committee, to be chaired by the Governor of Kwara state and other Governors to serve in the committee are: Bauchi, Imo, Delta, Sokoto, as well as members of technical committee from the proposed Police Broadcasting Services. Some of the Governors who spoke commended the IGP for his effort in dousing tension in the country, despite limited resources.
