LAGOS-AN unspecified number of passengers aboard BRT buses sustained varying degrees of injuries yesterday after two of the buses had a headon collision. Sources said the incident which took place at Dopemu area of the state was sequel to of the drivers avoiding rushing an unidentified motorcyclists with two passengers who dashed across the BRT lane.
Head, public affairs unit of the Lagos State Emerfency Management Agency LASEMA, Nosa Okunbor who confirmed the accident said he could give not accurate number of the injured persons since they were not at the scene of the accident when it occurred. He added that those injured passengers had been rushed to the hospital before rescue officials arrived. He added, “I cannot give you accurate number of those injured because we were not on ground when the incident occurred. But what I can say is that the buses according to what we were told were fully loaded and one of the buses was trying avoid crushing an okafa rider with two passengers behind, swarved his wheels and in the process had a head on collision with an oncoming BRT bus. The injured passengers had all be rushed to the hospital before our arrival.
“And upon arrival of Agency’s Response Team at the incident scene, the LRT discovered a road traffic accident involving two BRT buses, registration numbers unknown, at the aforementioned location. Further investigations at the scene revealed that the BRT bus headed inward Iyana Ipaja in attempts to avoid crushing a commercial motorcyclist with passengers plying the BRT corridor illegally, collided with an oncoming BRT bus. Fortunately, no lives were lost as a result of the incident. However, passengers of both buses reportedly suffered various degrees of injuries and were all taken to the nearest hospital before arrival of Agency’s Response Team. Two tow trucks were activated to evacuate the accident BRT buses off the road.”
