LOCKDOWN ORDER: Confusion in Ogun Police Command as Pregnant woman dies in labour at Police roadblock

CONFUSION broke out Thursday morning somewhere in Ibiade community in Ogun State after a pregnant woman who was apparently in labour suddenly slumped and died at a Police checkpoint mounted to enforce the presidential lockdown in the state.  Sources said the woman who was identified as Mrs. Opeoluwa Waidat Adedeji, a mother of 6 was being assisted in a motorbike popularly called Okada by her first son to a general hospital at Ita Otu; ostensibly to give birth but ran into a roadblock mounted by Policemen enforcing the lockdown order at Sowore adding that all entreaties by the deceased’s son that his mother was in labour fell on deaf ears as the Policemen ordered the bike-man and the pregnant woman back to where they were coming from. CrimeWorld scooped that when the overzealous Policemen later discovered that the pregnant woman had lost consciousness and slumped from the Okada that they hurriedly removed the sticks on the road for the bike to ride through but that didn’t help matter as the woman died shortly afterward.

In the meantime, news of the ugly incident had rented the air and youths of the Waterside community quickly mobilized and headed for the Ibiade Divisional Headquarters, bearing the corpse of the pregnant woman while chanting war songs in protest.  The visibly enraged youths sources said, laid the corpse on the ground at the Police station with a threat to burn down the building.  The situation was however, brought under control by the trio of the local government transition chairman, Comrade Oluwafemi Onanuga, the Alarige of Ibiade and the Ojotunmoro of Abigi who assured the crowd that justice would be served. Addressing the angry youth, comrade assured that he would ensure justice for the family of the late pregnant woman as well as reaching out to the executive governor of the state with a view to empowering two children of the deceased into the Ogun Waterside local government. In the same vein, the Area Commander sources hinted further promised the agitated crowd that he would speak with the Commissioner of Police CP Kenneth Ebrimson with a view to getting at least two children of the deceased enlisted into the Police Force in the next recruitment exercise as he assured that the overzealous Policemen would be fished out and handed over for in-house punishment.

It was not possible to get the reaction of the Police public relations officer of the Command, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi as calls put across to his phone rang out as usual. He has also yet to respond to the text message sent to his phone as of the time of filing this report. It was however, gathered that based on the intervention of the politician and traditional rulers of the community, the corpse was later evacuated from the Police station invariably for burial.
