AS Nigerians eagerly awaited the end of the seeming drama that would have unfolded in the Police indictment and invitation of the Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki in the deadly Offa banks robbery which claimed about 42 lives including 9 Police personnel, the Police have suddenly flip-flopped midway into the rather awaited ‘dance of the witches’ and said Dr. Saraki could reply to the allegation through writing instead of appearing before it. The Force public relations officer, ACP Jimoh Moshood had in a press statement on Friday June 1, 2018, paraded some key players including 5 gang leaders in the Offa banks robbery during which he said that the five suspects indicted the number three man in the country as their sponsor adding that two critical staff of the Kwara State Governor, Mr. Abdulfatai Ahmed were also among the suspected armed robbers arrested. Corollary, ACP Jimoh said the Police had invited Dr. Saraki to appear before the Force Intelligence Response Team Office at Guzape, Abuja to explain himself. In a swift reaction, the Senate President through his Special Adviser on media and publicity, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu had fired back at the Police saying he could not have sponsored armed robbery against his own people saying the Inspector-General of Police IGP Ibrahim Idris was playing game. Mr. Olaniyonu’s statement further hinted that IGP who had earlier been invited thrice by the same Senate headed by Dr. Saraki to come before it to explain the ceaseless killings across the country and failed to appear was now turning around to indict and invite him (Saraki) over heinous crime against the state. The statement however, quoted the Senate President as saying that he was ready to appear before the Police anytime to clear his name of any blemish intended because his hands were clean.

But after a closed door meeting between the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the DG of SSS, Lawal Daura and the IGP, Ibrahim Idris Monday June 4, 2018; the Police backtracked on it s earlier stance. Instead of the initial bravado, the Police said that the distinguished Senate President could respond to the allegation through writing within 48 hours. “Following my earlier tweet, I have received the letter from @PoliceNG. They are no longer asking me to appear at any station, but to respond in writing to the allegations within 48 hours, which I plan to do,” Saraki wrote.

CrimeWorld investigation revealed that Police somersault followed a strong advice from the Vice President during the closed door meeting at the Presidential villa that the outcome of the Police invitation of Dr. Saraki might have negative impact on PMB’s second term bid adding that it may even spew corresponding riots in Kwara State. Reports say the erudite professor of law advised that such muscle flexing between the Police high Command and the Senate was unwarranted especially, now that the timeline to decide their continuous occupation of Aso Rock Villa was fast approaching and running out all together and would be determined by the people.
